An Essential Prelude

annarosegeddes

A brief introduction is only polite to catch everyone up to speed or even learn a few new things about the North East of Scotland, also known as the Grampian region.

This historically rich area is best known for its scenic beauty and turbulent relationship with oil. Aberdeen, one of the largest cities in Scotland, serves as the industrial beating heart of the region. Upon visiting Aberdeen, one of the first impressions that can be made is its granite architecture, which sparkles silver in the light, earning the city the nickname 'The Granite City' (and also crowning this newspaper). Examples of Aberdeen Granite can be found beyond the city, such as the Houses of Parliament terraces and Waterloo Bridge.

Surrounding the city are castles, fishing towns, rolling hills and many, many distilleries, each contributing to the area's humble vibrance. Every corner of the North East holds historic significance, from the numerous Pictish stones and symbols left by the medieval Celts to the dramatic castles overlooking the coast, serving as reminders of the Jacobite rebellion.

Doric, the dialect historically spoken by locals, is now commonly only heard in the coastal communities. However, ongoing efforts in language revitalization aim to encourage the embracement of heritage. Doric's Germanic roots have endured through intergenerational communication and its place in literary history, appearing in many Scottish songs and poems over time, emphasising the uniqueness of this cultural expression.

The food and drink in this area are also significant assets, ranging from independent coffee, beer, and whiskey to the famous Aberdeen Angus beef, which is exported globally. The vast agricultural heritage of the shire has resulted in many distinctive dishes, allowing locals and visitors to enjoy meats, fish, and vegetables that have not travelled far.

While the North East of Scotland may sometimes be overshadowed within its own country, with economic and media attention often directed toward the central belt, this does not accurately reflect the region's unique qualities. There is a natural beauty lying within the people and places here that deserves recognition and respect.
