The Fishing Villages

annarosegeddes

Several coastal communities in the North East are deeply tied to the fishing industry, with the culture in this region supplying many with employment, hobbies, economy contribution and most importantly, pride.

In the picturesque villages that line the coast, you will find the most unpretentious people and the most unpretentious places. Many villages could be discussed, such as Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Pennan, or Gourdon, as they offer significant contributions to the fishing history. However, only a favoured few will be discussed in detail.

Footdee, or 'Fittie' as the locals call it, is one of Aberdeen's hidden gems. This former fishing village now maintains orderly yet beautifully decorated cottages and ramshackle outbuildings where the fishing history can be discovered on every corner. Fittie started with 56 homes, which increased to 80 as soon as overcrowding became a looming issue. As these cottages were built by the council, the similarity in width, height, windows, and doors fantastically clashes with the new adjustments owners have made since their properties were allowed to be bought over in the 1870s. Fittie is now classed as a conservation area and adds to the perfect uniqueness and vibrancy of the North East.

Banff is a historic fishing village with, without bias, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and classic Georgian-style buildings such as Banff Castle and Duff House. In this area, the Doric dialect can be heard all around, as the traditional way of living has stubbornly stood its ground. The Banff harbour supports both leisure and commercial activities, with boats that focus mainly on haddock, cod, and prawns.

Avid surfers flock to Gardenstown, also known as Gamrie, as its sea provides strong waves and a practically vacant beach. It's the Scottish Santorini, if you squint hard enough. This small village has houses built vertically into the old sandstone cliffs overlooking the harbour and beach, where a dolphin on occasion may be showing off. There is a selection of galleries, pottery, and art workshops to entertain you while you overlook the sweeping views or travel to nearby villages along the antiquated coastal pathway.

In these picturesque villages that line the coast, you will find the most loving people and the places they have poured that love into. These pockets of the North East encapsulate the region's culture and enchant a distinctive and untouched beauty.
