Indulging in the rich aroma of coffee, I must admit, that my knowledge of the brew is less than impressive. Nevertheless, what I do know to be true is that these cafes provide caffeine to make your heart beat faster, food to make your soul feel lighter and people who make your day feel better.
Greyhope Bay is an eco facility overlooking the city's harbour hosting many community-based events such as beach cleaning, art classes and wellness workshops. They operate off-the-grid, using alternative hybrid energy and circular rainwater technology, with an emphasis on recycling throughout your experience there. Bring a flashlight to navigate your way through the outdoor, dry composting toilets and embrace the unique experience. Mount Coffee has collaborated with this inspiring team to offer the opportunity for a quick visit and indulgence in their beautiful coffee, home bakes and sandwiches. The café is open from 10 am-4 pm and encourages our connection with the marine world. The view is hard to miss, but keep an eye out for the frequent dolphin spot and other wildlife sightings from any of the 200 bird species residing in the area to humpback whales.
Rothesay Rooms offers an exquisite cup of coffee and the utmost experience of Scottish cuisine. Their menu explores local dishes from breakfast butteries to stovies and haggis cottage pie. This community-inspired café was established by HRH The Prince of Wales after a flooding and fire in 2015, destroying the building and attraction for tourism. There is a sophisticated old-time feel as you can enjoy your meal alongside a traditional train carriage which compliments the experience of being in the area of Ballater perfectly.
Foodstory was one of my first teenage experiences in realising the hidden gems of the city. Through their rapid success, there is now nothing hidden about this faultless café as it has developed into various forms from providing university students with their daily caffeine hit, warming up courageous beach walkers out of a hut and most recently, making their way down to Edinburgh to expand the clientele. The original café on Rosemount St welcomes you in with its intimate feel and perfect balance of minimal and industrial design. The full vegetarian menu is a delight to choose from and if you want to stick around, you can experience one of their many events from morning yoga to late-night dancing.
On the more wholesome end of café experiences, the Old Post Office Tearoom based out in the shire hosts the most idyllic coffee spot for when you are on the way to hike up Bennachie, travelling to see grandparents out in the sticks, or just fancy a quiet moment away from the usual bustle. This cosy tearoom will give you the ultimate experience of rural Scotland with cosy corners, soul-warming home bakes, local produce and a picturesque outdoor area.
If there's one thing the North East thrives in, it's food. Not only is most of the produce you will be served from just down the road, or from just down the beach in some cases, but the interiors and atmosphere in our restaurants are just as excellent as the food and wine.
Nestled in the beating heart of the city, Café Boheme stands as the epitome of sophistication, seamlessly weaving together the culinary traditions of France and Scotland.
The meticulously curated menu is a testament to the artistry that defines Café Boheme. As a vegetarian, the siren call of the Pithivier proves irresistible, though the enchanting array of fish and meat options artfully beckons. The connoisseurship of the staff extends beyond the plate, as their knowledge of wines is expertly executed to complement every nuance of your sophisticated experience.Tasteful interiors serve as the backdrop to this culinary spectacle, elevating each visit to an outstanding affair.
The Silver Darling is a darling spot to take your hottest date, deserving Mum or to enjoy alone as the view itself is good enough company. Ascending to the upstairs dining area, guests are embraced by an atmosphere that effortlessly compliments the eating experience. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame panoramic views of the city's beach, the bustling harbour, and the historic fishing village lovingly referred to as 'Fittie' by locals. The extensive selection of fish dishes will catch the eye featuring their catch of the day and made-to-perfection Cullen Skink.Every meal here is an ode to the beauty that surrounds and the flavours that captivate.
